Cal Tabbed Three Times for ABC's Inaugural Saturday Night College Football Package
May 16, 2006
BERKELEY - The University of California will be a big part of ABC's inaugural Saturday Night College Football package, which will take to the air for the first time in 2006.
The network has announced that three Golden Bears games will be part of the package. Those games include home contests against Oregon (Oct. 7) and UCLA (Nov. 4) and the road game at USC Nov. 18. The contest with the Ducks is part of Homecoming weekend festivities. Each game will kick off at 5 p.m. PT.
ABC's first weekly foray into prime time college football begins Sept. 2 with Notre Dame at Georgia Tech and is followed by Ohio State at defending national champion Texas Sept. 9. USC (five) and Cal (three) are the only Pac-10 teams to be picked for more than one date.
The network will feature 12 weeks of showdowns of some of college football's best programs. ABC's venture is the first college football series in prime time on broadcast television and will also be available in high definition. The schedule does not include games on Oct. 21 and 28.
Commentator Brent Musburger will handle play-by-play duties, and Bob Davie will be the analyst. They will be joined by ESPN College GameDay and ESPN College Football Thursday prime-time analyst Kirk Herbstreit on certain weeks. Lisa Salters, an NBA sideline reporter and general assignment correspondent for multiple ESPN news outlets, will report from the sidelines.
College GameDay will kick off its 20th season by originating from the site of the first two ABC prime-time telecasts: Georgia Tech Sept. 2 and Texas Sept. 9.
California appeared on television 11 times during the 2005 season, including games on ESPN, Fox Sports, TBS and ABC.
The 2006 Bears open the season Sept. 2 at Tennessee and return home to face Minnesota the following week at Memorial Stadium. Cal is rated No. 8 by SI.com in the web site's most recent preseason poll.
