Morris Named Pac-10 Player Of The Week
May 16, 2006
Walnut Creek, Calif. - Stanford senior Catalina Morris has been named the Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week, and California's Kristina Thorson has been named Pitcher of the Week for May 9-15, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
The Sonoita, Ariz. native batted .375 over the weekend to lead Stanford to three consecutive Pac-10 victories, including two upsets of No. 1 UCLA. She collected three runs, one double, one triple and was 2-2 in stolen bases.
Morris scored the game-winning run off of an RBI single by Jackie Rinehart on Friday against UCLA, and then scored the first and second runs on Saturday.
A two-time NFCA All-American, Morris has earned All-Pac-10 honors for three consecutive years, and also is a two-time member of the Pac-10 All-Academic team. She currently leads the Cardinal in batting average (.376) and hits (65), marks that rank her among the Top-10 in the league.
Stanford (10-11, 38-15), travels south to Fresno for the NCAA Regional Tournament this week, facing Tulsa on Friday, May 19 at 7:30 pm.
A native of Lake Forest Park, Wash., Thorson pitched 23 scoreless innings over the weekend, against No. 1/1 UCLA and No. 17/17 Washington, while striking out 40 and walking only one. After giving up two runs in the fourth inning against UCLA, she threw 20 consecutive scoreless innings, including a 10-inning shutout of the Huskies on Friday.
With Saturday's complete game shutout of Washington, Thorson moved into second on Cal's single-season wins list. Her 15 strikeouts on the game moved her to 1,009 career K's, and she is just the third Bear pitcher to eclipse the 1,000-strikeout mark. Thorson sits at fifth place on the Pac-10 single-season strikeout list with 399, and is seventh on the Conference career strikeout list with 1,009.
Thorson has given up just four earned runs in the last 57.1 innings, all against Pac-10 opponents that she has held to an ERA of 0.50. She leads the Conference in innings pitched (264.0), strikeouts (399), batters struck out looking (158), wins (32), and saves (5).
California (12-9, 44-12), travels to Iowa City, Iowa as the No. 10 overall seed in the NCAA Regional Tournament, and will play Iowa State on Fri., May 19 at 5 p.m.
This is Morris' first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and Stanford's 31st weekly honor all-time. Thorson's award marks her third Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honor and California's 57th weekly honor all-time.
