Stanford Men Prepare For NCAA West Regional

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford men's golf team heads to Tucson, Arizona, May 18-20, for the 2006 NCAA West Regional Arizona at the Omni Tucson National Golf Club. Teams will play a 54 hole format at the par 72, 7,200 yard course over three days.
The West Regional participants are (listed by seed) 1. Florida, 2. Arizona State, 3. BYU, 4. East Tennessee State, 5. Baylor, 6. Alambama, 9. North Carolina State, 10. Washington, 11. New Mexico, 12. Stanford, 13. Houston, 14. Pepperdine, 15. Louisville, 16. Denver, 17. Santa Clara, 18. New Mexico State, 19. Fresno State, 20. UC-Irvine, 21. Nevada, 22. San Diego, 23. Cal Poly, 24. Western Kentucky, 25. Loyola Marymount, 26. Jackson State and 27. Bucknell. Individuals are 1. Matt Bortis, Arkansas, 2. Kane Hanson, Drake, 3. Gary Woodland, Kansas, 4. Korey Mahoney, Eastern Michigan, 5. Patrick Nagle, Illinois and 6. Ryan Brehm, Michigan State.
The Cardinal will be paired with Washington and New Mexico in the first round with tee times beginning at 12:35 p.m. from the 10th tee.
The championships will be conducted May 31-June 3 at Crosswater Golf Club at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Oregon. The University of the Portland is the host institution for this year's championships.
Three regional tournaments, encompassing the current nine regions, will be conducted May 18-20. A total of 27 teams and six individuals not on selected teams were assigned to each regional site. Ten teams and two individuals not on advancing teams will move on from each regional to the championship finals.

Last year, the Stanford men's golf team, behind the play of Rob Grube, rallied in the final round of the NCAA West Regional at the Stanford Golf Course to earn a berth at the NCAA Championships. The Cardinal men, seeded 16th at last year's regionals, shot a final round of 283 to compile a 54-hole total of 863 to finish eighth in the 27-team field. Grube won the individual regional title with a three round score of 204 (69-70-65). Zack Miller tied for 67th while Pat Phillips and Kevin Blue tied for 73rd. Matt Savage rounded out the Cardinal competitors, tying for 118th overall.
Earlier this month, Stanford sophomore Rob Grube was tabbed the Pac-10 Men's Golf Co-Player of the Year. Grube has eight top 10 finished on the year including victories at the Western Intercollegiate and U.S. Intercollegiate. Over 11 events he has recorded 12 under par rounds and eight rounds at par while posting a 71.1 stroke average. Teammate Zack Miller was a second-team all-conference selection while Dodge Kemmer picked up honorable mention honors.
The Cardinal have competed in 12 events this season with five top 10 finishes and and additional five top 10 finishes. Their best finish on the year was a tie for second at the Western Intercollegiate in March. Last month, the team finished sixth at the Pac-10 Championships in preparation for this week's competition.
