Ryan Witz Completes First Round at NCAA West Regional

May 18, 2006

TUCSON, Ariz. - Washington State University's Ryan Witz found himself in the top half of the 141 player field Thursday, finishing the first round tied for 51st at the NCAA Division I Men's West Regional hosted by the University of Arizona at the par-72, 7,200 yard Omni Tucson National Golf Club May 18-20.

Witz, who was selected to compete as an individual, started off the three-day tournament with a birdie on the opening hole, following it up with a bogey on the third hole to find himself at even par. The Tucson, Ariz., native stayed consistent throughout the front nine but stepped up on the back nine to improve his positioning in the field.

After sinking four birdies and one double bogey, Witz found himself at 2-under heading into the final hole. A double bogey on the 9th hole brought him back to even par landing himself in a group of 19 players knotted at 51st heading into the second round.

Witz is looking to continue a successful senior campaign that has already brought a first place finish at the Duck Invitational, an All-Pac-10 honorable mention accolade, and five top-10 efforts. Witz, who is making his first appearance at the NCAA Regional tournament, is also the first Cougar to appear since the 2002 season.

The NCAA West Regional will continue Friday with the second set of 18 holes teeing off at 7:00 a.m. followed by the final 18 holes being played on Saturday. The top 10 teams and two individuals in the event will qualify for the 2006 NCAA Men's Golf Championships, May 31-June 3 at the Crosswater Club at the Sunriver Resort at Sunriver, Ore.
