No. 25 Wichita State Pulls Away Late With 11-3 Win Over USC
May 19, 2006
WICHITA, Kansas - Two-run hits by Josh Workman and Brian Spear provided the offense early Friday as the No. 25 Wichita State Shockers beat the USC Trojans, 11-3, in the first game of a non conference series at Eck Stadium. The Shockers halted a six-inning rally by the Trojans with one of three double plays on the night after USC had loaded the bases and scored three times to cut the deficit to one run.
Workman hit a triple off USC All-American Ian Kennedy (5-6) in the third, followed by Spear's double in the fourth for a 4-0 lead. Wichita State (41-18) blew the game open with three runs in the seventh and four in the eighth.
Freshman Aaron Shafer went to 10-2 on the season for the Shockers, allowing three runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. Kennedy gave up seven runs (four earned) in 6 1/3 innings on seven hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.
Derek Schermerhorn went 3-for-5 for the Shockers with two RBI.
With runners at second and third and no outs in the top of the fourth, Baron Frost hit a fly ball to WSU right fielder Matt Brown, who cut down Blake Sharpe from third for the 9-2 double play. Sharpe left the game later with a right knee injury and is listed as day-to-day. In the sixth, Lucas Duda hit into a 6-4-3 double play with the bases loaded to end the inning. The Shockers scored the fifth run when Kennedy hit Conor Gillaspie with the bases loaded.
USC freshman Ryan Cook, who was diagnosed with mononucleosis, made his first appearance since April 23 with two-thirds of an inning.
The series continues tomorrow with a 2 p.m. start on Saturday and 1 p.m. start on Sunday. Both games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
