No. 7 Stanford Blanks Tulsa, 8-0, To Open NCAA Tournament

Fresno, Calif. - No. 7 Stanford Softball (39-15, 10-11) blanked Tulsa (34-23), 8-0, to open the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Cardinal jumped to an early lead in the bottom of the third inning off of a double by senior Lauren Lappin. Stanford then brought in seven runs in the fifth inning to bring the game to an early end. Freshman pitcher Missy Penna allowed just two Golden Hurricane hits to improve to 21-9 on the season.
Senior outfielder Catalina Morris was walked on base to open the bottom of the first inning and later stole second base. Lappin laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Morris to third base, but the inning closed without a Cardinal run.
In the bottom of the second inning, Penna knocked a single to shorstop to get on base. Sophomore infielder Michelle Smith followed with another single to shortstop to move Penna to second base. Sophomore infielder Erin Howe then advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, but the Cardinal hitters couldn't bring them home.
The Golden Hurricane put two runners on base in the top of the third inning, but Penna struck out two batters to bring the Cardinal up to bat. Morris opened the bottom of the inning with a base hit to left field and junior outfielder Jackie Rinehart followed with a bunt to get on base. Lappin then slammed a double to center field, bringing home Rinehart for the first run of the game.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Lappin knocked a single up the middle to get on base, later stealing second base. Penna collected a base hit to right field, advancing Lappin to third. Smith was walked to load the bases. On a full count, Howe hit a single over the centerfielder's head to bring home Lappin and Penna. Senior Shoney Hixson entered the game to pinch run for Smith at second base. Sophomore infielder Tricia Aggabao followed with a double against the left field fence, scoring Hixson for a 4-0 Cardinal lead. Julie Fennell entered the game to pitch for Tulsa and junior outfielder Anna Beardman hit another double to right field, scoring Howe from third base. Morris was walked to load the bases again. Rinehart's sacrifice fly to center field brought in Aggabao for a 6-0 lead. Lappin was hit by a pitch to load the bases, then freshman infielder Maddy Coon was also hit by a pitch to bring in Beardman. Penna then slammed a single deep into center field to score Morris and end the game early, 8-0.
In five innings, Penna struck out five batters and allowed two hits. Tulsa's Maren Genow struck out two batters, walked three and allowed ten hits in just over four innings, while Fennell walked one and allowed two hits.
Penna was 3-4 at the plate with one run and one RBI, while Lappin was 2-2 with one run and one RBI. Howe was 1-2 with one run and two RBI and Morris was 1-2 with two runs scored and two walks. Aggabao was also 2-3 with one run and one RBI.
Stanford will now face host Fresno State tomorrow at 12:00 pm at Bulldog Diamond. Fresno State beat Cal State Fullerton, 2-0, in the first game of the day to match up against the Cardinal.
