LOS ANGELES - After going seven games without hitting a home run, UCLA hit four in their NCAA opener against Missouri State en route to a 11-2 victory. The Bruins advance to play a winners bracket game on Saturday at 2:30 pm PT. The game will be televised live by ESPNU.
UCLA started hot as Anjelica Selden struck out the first two batters she faced and faced the minimum in the top of the first. The Bruin bats went to work in the bottom half of the inning with consecutive hits from Andrea Duran and Krista Colburn to open the inning. After a sacrifice bunt from Caitlin Benyi, Jodie Legaspi connected on a three-run home run over the scoreboard in left field to give UCLA the 3-0 lead.
In the second, it was more of the same as Whitney Holum had a leadoff single straight up the middle before being replaced by pinch runner Alissa Eno. Eno stole second, went to third on a single by Tara Henry and scored on a single to right by Duran, with Henry going to third on the play. Henry would score on a sacrifice fly to left by Colburn before Benyi put her ninth home run of the season over the scoreboard in left field, giving the Bruins a 7-0 lead.
Missouri State put a run across the plate in the third as Katie Martin hit a one-out double to left, advanced to third on a ground-out by Sara Cole and scored on a single up the middle by Samantha Fleeman to make the score 7-1 in UCLA's favor. Fleeman would connect again in the sixth inning on a solo home run to make the score 7-1
Selden protected the lead with 11 strike outs in 6 innings, her 18th double-figure strike out game of the season, her first since the Bruins May 5th game in Oregon.
The game was ended by the 'run rule' when Colburn sent a 2 run shot over the right field wall in the bottom of the 6th inning, putting the Bruins ahead by a final score of 11-2.
UCLA faces Long Beach State on Saturday at 2:30pm at Easton Stadium. The 49ers defeated San Diego State, 1-0, to advance into the winner's bracket game. Missouri State will face the Aztecs tomorrow at 5 pm in an elimination game. All games from the Los Angeles Regional will be televised live by ESPNU.
