LOS ANGELES - UCLA advanced to Sunday's Regional Championship game with a 5-0 win over Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon at Easton Stadium. The Bruins offense continued to pound out the hits, connecting on 10 hits and three home runs on the day.
UCLA broke up a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning when Ashley Herrera drew a one-out walk off of Long Beach State pitcher Michelle. Turner. The Bruins Tara Henry reached on a bunt single to third and advanced to second base on a throwing error by the Beach's Melanie McCauley. Herrera came all the way around to score the first run of the game on the play after first baseman Jonae Perez ran down the errant throw and then misfired on her own throw home in an attempt to get Herrera. Henry ended up at third base on the play's second error. Bruin leadoff hitter Andrea Duran followed with a single into left field to plate Henry with the second run of the inning. Turner then retired the next two batters to end the Bruin inning.
In the sixth inning, UCLA's Jodie Legaspi and Lisa Dodd hit back-to-back one-out home runs over the left field fence to up the Bruin lead to 4-0. It was Legaspi's team-leading 15th home run of the season and third homer in two games of this regional. For Dodd, it was her eighth round tripper of the season. It marked the first time this season that the Bruins had hit consecutive home runs.
The Bruin power barrage continued in the seventh inning as right fielder Krista Colburn sent a Turner pitch over the right center field wall to give the Bruins a 5-0 lead.
In the circle, UCLA sophomore Anjelica Selden gave up two hits while throwing her 13th shutout of the season while earning her 30th win of the year.
UCLA's opponent for Sunday's championship game will not be determined until the conclusion of tonight's 7:30 pm game. All games from the Los Angeles Regional will be televised live by ESPNU.
