No. 25 Wichita State Holds Off USC With 11-7 Victory
May 20, 2006
WICHITA, Kansas - Reliever Noah Krol got Cyle Hankerd to ground into a 4-6-3 double play with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth Saturday as the No. 25 Wichita State Shockers defeated the USC Trojans, 11-7, to win the non conference series. Hankerd, who had three hits in the game, represented the tying run after the Trojans scored three times in the inning.
USC (25-28) stranded 14 runners on the afternoon and held a 4-1 lead in the fourth before Wichita State (42-28) scored 10 unanswered runs, including five runs in the seventh. Rob Musgrave (6-2) got the win for the Shockers with 3 2/3 scoreless innings after entering the game in the third for starter Travis Banwart. Tommy Milone (7-3) was tagged for the loss for the Trojans, allowing six runs (two earned) in 5 2/3 innings.
Conor Gillaspie was credited with a 5-for-5 performance for the Shockers with two doubles and two RBI. Hankerd and Darin Vieira had three hits each for the Trojans. On the season, Hankerd now has 23 multi-hit games with 10 three-hit performances.
It was not an easy day, however, for Shocker second baseman Derek Schermerhorn, who was charged for all four of his team's errors in the game.
WSU took the lead in the sixth with all four runs coming with two outs. With runners at first and second, Matt Brown took off for third base and USC catcher Johnny Bowden's throw bounced into left field. Brown scored and Gillaspie moved to third. Danny Jackson then hit a ground ball to short and the ensuing throw from Hector Estrella short hopped the glove of first baseman Lucas Duda to tie the game at 4-4. The Trojans' second error of the inning proved costly as the Shockers scored two more runs with Tyler Weber and Brian Spear hitting back-to-back RBI singles. WSU sent 11 batters to the plate as part of the five-run seventh inning.
One of Schermerhorn's errors came in the top of the ninth that allowed USC to put runners at second and third with no outs. Freshman Michael Torres hit a two-run single to left. Schermerhorn then caught Roberto Lopez's line drive, but his throw to first sailed into the WSU dugout and the error allowed Torres to advance to third. Pinch-hitter Garrett Gipe was hit by an 0-2 pitch and Matt Cusick singled home Torres. Vieira's single loaded the bases and knocked out Noah Booth, but Krol notched his third save of the season after ending the game on Hankerd's double play.
The series concludes tomorrow at 1 p.m. Central time. The game will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
