No. 7 Stanford Falls To No. 22 Fresno State, 3-0

Fresno, Calif. - No. 7 Stanford Softball (39-16, 10-11) fell to NCAA Regional host No. 22 Fresno State (37-17), 3-0, this afternoon at Bulldog Stadium. Fresno State jumped to an early lead in the third inning off of a RBI double by Christina Clark. The Bulldogs scored two more runs in the fifth inning as pitcher Robin Mackin hit a two-run home run.
Freshman infielder Maddy Coon was the first Cardinal batter to get on base with a walk in the top of the second inning. Sophomore infielder Michelle Smith advanced Coon to second base with a sacrifice bunt and sophomore Erin Howe was walked to first. The inning ended runless for the Cardinal.
Shannon Garvin was walked on base for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the third inning. Clark then hit a double deep into center field to score Garvin in a close play at home plate. After three innings, Fresno State led, 1-0.
In the top of the fourth inning, Coon was walked again, but the Cardinal hitters couldn't bring her home.
Fresno State loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth with three base hits. The Bulldogs' Kristin Sylvester attempted to score on a wild pitch, but was out at the plate to close the inning.
Sophomore infielder Tricia Aggabao collected the Cardinal's first hit with a single to center field in the top of the fifth inning, but the Bulldogs held Stanford's hitters off.
Haley Perkins got on base for Fresno State in the bottom of the inning with a double to right field. Mackin then slammed a home run over the left field fence to increase the Bulldog lead to three runs.
In the top of the sixth inning, senior infielder Lauren Lappin was walked on base. Coon knocked a single to shortstop to advance Lappin to second base, but the inning closed without a Cardinal run.
On a full count with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Aggabao knocked a single to center field to get on base. Fresno State's defense held the Cardinal off for a 3-0 win.
Sophomore pitcher Becky McCullough struck out four Bulldog batters and walked just one in six innings, allowing nine hits. Fresno State's Mackin struck out seven batters, walked four and allowed three hits in seven innings.
Cal State Fullerton and Tulsa will square off at 2:30 pm today. Stanford will then take on the winner of that game at 5:00 pm tonight.
