No. 7 Stanford Forces Second Game With 9-3 Win Over No. 22 Fresno State

Fresno, Calif. - No. 7 Stanford Softball (41-16, 10-11) overtook No. 22 Fresno State (37-18), 9-3, to force a second game today determining the Region VI champion. The Cardinal took over the lead in the bottom of the first inning with four runs off of five hits, adding three more runs in the second inning. Stanford also scored one run in the third and sixth innings with a total 11 hits. Freshman pitcher Missy Penna struck out seven batters to improve to 22-9 on the season.
In Fresno State's first at-bat, Christina Clark hit a home run over the center field fence to put the Bulldogs up, 1-0. With the bases loaded, Penna struck out two Fresno State batters to bring the Cardinal to the plate.
Senior outfielder Catalina Morris opened the bottom of the first inning with a double to center field. Junior outfielder Jackie Rinehart followed with a base hit to shortstop and senior Lauren Lappin loaded the bases with a single to left field. Freshman infielder Maddy Coon then knocked a double to left field, bringing home Morris and Rinehart. Coon took third base on an error by the shortstop, with Lappin scoring on the error. Penna hit a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing home Coon for the 4-1 Cardinal lead.
Rinehart slapped a base hit past the pitcher in the bottom of the second inning. Lappin advanced Rinehart with a single up the middle, then Coon's base hit to right field scored Rinehart for a 5-1 Stanford lead. Fresno State brought Maryann Barr in to pitch midway through the second inning and Penna was walked to load the bases. Sophomore infielder Michelle Smith hit a base hit to left field, scoring Lappin and Coon for the 7-1 lead.
In the top of the third inning, Haley Perkins hit a double to left field, later taking third base on a wild pitch. Robin Mackin was walked on base, then Nichole Willis hit a single to center field to score Perkins. Stanford continued to lead, 7-2, after two and a half innings.
Sophomore infielder Tricia Aggabao opened the bottom of the third with a single to right field and later took second base on a passed ball. Morris reached on an error by the second baseman and Aggabao scored on the error.
Willis opened the fifth inning for the Bulldogs with a home run over the left field fence. Penna struck out three batters in a row to end the half inning.
Penna struck out two more batters in the top of the sixth inning to bring the Cardinal up to bat. Morris opened the bottom of the inning with a triple to right field. Rinehart scored Morris with a sacrifice fly to center field. Stanford held on to the 9-3 win.
Stanford and Fresno State will now play a second game at 3:30 to determine which team will advance to the Super Regional next weekend.
