Cardinal Women Seek Second Straight NCAA Regional Title

May 23, 2006

Provo, Ut - Thirty-four Stanford student-athletes and two women's relay teams will be competing this weekend (May 26-27) at the 2006 NCAA West Region Track & Field Championships at the Clarence Robison Track on the campus of Brigham Young University.

This is the fourth year of the Regional competition. Last year, the Stanford women's team tallied 110.50 points to outscore runnerup UCLA which tallied 85 points to win the regional title at the University of Oregon. Victories by Janice Davis in the 100 meters, Sara Bei in the 5000 meters, and the 1600 meter relay team helped pave the way to victory. In all, 15 Cardinal women qualified for the NCAA Championship. The Stanford men finished sixth and qualified seven athletes including regional discus champion Michael Robertson, who went on to win the NCAA title.

To qualify for the NCAA Track & Field Championships (June 7-10) at Sacramento State, collegiate athletes must compete at the NCAA Regionals which are taking place throughout the United States this weekend. Automatic berths will be granted to the Top-5 finishers in each individual event at the regional, and to the Top-3 relay teams. After the automatic qualifiers have been identified, the NCAA track and field committee will place the next seven declared athletes/relay teams (plus ties based on place) in each event based upon regional performance into the national at-large pool. Previously, only the next three declared athletes/relay teams in each regional event advanced to the at-large pool. The at-large pool athletes are then listed in order of their best performances of the year, including any best marks established at the regional meet. The committee will fill the field in each event by starting at the top of the at-large pool until the cap of 544 athletes per gender is reached. The lone exceptions are the 10,000 meters and multi-events, in which athletes qualify directly for the NCAA Championship by meeting automatic and provisional standards.

Complete results will be available at www.byucougars.com, and a daily Stanford story will be available at www.gostanford.com
