Burduli's Season Ends at NCAA Individual Singles Championship

STANFORD, Calif. - Washington State sophomore Ekaterina Burduli's stellar season ended Wednesday, May 26 at the hands of No. 13 Cristelle Grier of Northwestern during the NCAA Individual Singles Championship. Burduli dropped the match to Grier, 6-4, 6-4 at the Taube Tennis Center.
In the first set, Burduli's comeback came up short as Grier won the set 6-4. Burduli took the first game, but lost four straight games and she quickly found herself down 4-1. After winning a service break, Burduli inched closer after defeated Grier in the next game and closed the gap to 4-3. The two student-athletes exchanged games in the next two opportunities and Grier captured the 10th game with a kill shot toward the baseline to claim the set.
Burduli dropped the second set 6-4, after taking a 1-0 lead and exchanging games with Grier to even the set to 4-4. Grier then earned a service break, which put her up 5-4. In the final game, Burduli was at break point, but couldn't get over the hump and dropped the set and match to Grier.
Burduli ends her 2005-06 season with 25 wins, which is good enough for a third place tie on WSU's single season victory list. She recently received Pacific-10 Conference Honorable Mention and is currently ranked 62nd.
'I was disappointed I didn't win, but the overall trip was amazing,' Burduli said. 'It was a learning experience and this will give me the motivation I need to come back next year.'
Play resumes tomorrow and will not end until singles and doubles championship matches are played, Monday, May 29.
