May 24, 2006
Stanford, Calif. - Tournament favorite Benjamin Kohlloeffel of UCLA posted a straight-set victory Tuesday, advancing to the second round of singles play at the NCAA Championships at Stanford's Taube Tennis Stadium.
Kohlloeffel, the No. 1 seed, downed Florida's 38th-ranked Vladimir Obradovic, 6-2, 6-4 in the first round, setting up a second-round showdown with Colorado's 51st-ranked Eric Molnar. It will mark the second meeting between the two players in the last two weeks, as Kohlloeffel downed Molnar, 6-0, 6-0 in UCLA's 4-0 victory over Colorado in the second round of the team championships.
Kohlloeffel, who improved his record to 42-4 on the season, is looking to become UCLA's first NCAA Singles Champion since current head coach Billy Martin won the title as a freshman back in 1975.
