Lindsey Nelson Moves On In NCAA Singles; Two Trojans Still To Play Today
May 24, 2006
In the first round of the NCAA Singles Championships, Lindsey Nelson was the first Trojan to pocket a ticket to the next round with a 6-2, 6-4 upset of #12 Elena Gantcheva from UNLV. Nelson's win had followed losses by fellow Women of Troy Luana Magnani and Dianne Matias. Amanda Fink and Anca Anastasiu have their first-round matches set for 6 p.m. tonight. Live scoring is available through www.gostanford.com.
Luana Magnani was one of the first matches to begin, as the senior squared off against the defending NCAA singles champion, Zuzana Zemenova of Baylor. Magnani fell 6-4, 6-2 to Zemenova. Meanwhile, Dianne Matias was taking on a familiar opponent to the Trojans in VCU's Tatsiana Uvarova. Uvarova was VCU's No. 1 singles player during the NCAA Team Championships, where USC faced VCU in the Round of 16. Uvarova had downed Lindsey Nelson at the No. 1 position to claim VCU's only point of the match -- an eventual 4-1 USC win that pushed the Trojans into the quarterfinals. Uvarova proved tough during singles action as well, beating Matias 6-1, 6-4.
When Lindsey Nelson took the court against UNLV's Gantcheva, she took control of the match early, and despite a couple breaks in the second set, Nelson charged on to win 6-2, 6-4. She moves into the second round to face either Texas-Arlington's Klara Jagasova or Fresno State's Melanie Gloria on Thursday (May 25). Nelson reached the NCAA Singles Round of 16 last year as a freshman.
Thursday also marks the start of the NCAA Doubles Championships, where USC has two teams lined up for action. Magnani/Nelson will face Notre Dame's No. 3 seeded Catrina Thompson/Christian Thompson, and Matias/ Carine Vermeulen take on Clemson's Carol Salge/Federica van Adrichem in the first round.
