Babos Advances to Singles Quarterfinals

Stanford, Calif. - Suzi Babos upset sixth-ranked Zuzana Zemenova of Baylor in the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships singles round of 16 Friday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center at Stanford, and will advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow. In doubles action, Babos and Zsuzsanna Fodor fell in the round of 16.
In singles play Babos, who currently holds a No. 27 singles ranking, upset sixth-ranked and fourth-seeded Zemenova of Baylor in two straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, in the round of 16. Babos will face No. 54 Riza Zalameda of UCLA in the quarterfinals tomorrow at noon. Zalameda upset eighth-ranked Amber Liu of Stanford, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5, to advance.
'In singles today Suzi played like she did in 2005, she played like her preseason ranking,' said head coach Jan Brogan. 'She is playing really well and taking it one match at a time. She is excited to play tomorrow. Zalameda is playing really well in this tournament.'
In doubles, eighth-ranked Babos and Fodor fell to 13th-ranked Cristelle Grier and Alexis Prousis of Northwestern, 6-4, 6-2, in the doubles round of 16. Babos and Fodor conclude their doubles season with a 21-9 overall record.
'Northwester was on fire,' said Brogan. 'We didn't play as well as we could have and we didn't capitalize on our opportunities. It was disappointing for both of them. Northwestern played very well.'
