May 27, 2006

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - Defending NCAA champion California placed all three of its boats into Sunday's grand finals with a strong performance at the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships Saturday morning.

In its varsity eight semifinal, the Golden Bears, who are ranked second in the latest poll, built an early seven-seat lead before cruising across the finish line in 6:30.462. Michigan State (6:32.134) and Ohio State (6:32.575) traded second place several times down the course, and the Spartans came out ahead at the end, earning the school's first bid to the eights final.

Top-rated Princeton also captured its heat in the eights, controlling the race throughout and posting a time of 6:20.858. Brown crossed the line in 6:26.356, while Washington State (6:27.417) held off Minnesota (6:28.819) for the heat's final berth to the final.

On Sunday, Cal, Princeton, Brown, Michigan State, Ohio State and Washington State will race in the grand final at 9 a.m. PT.

After taking second in its opening heat in the second varsity eights Friday, Cal was forced to compete in a repechage Saturday. The Bears (6:42.008) and Washington State (6:43.440) snared the top two spots in the first heat, while Wisconsin (6:36.600) and Princeton (6:38.132) secured their bids to the final with top-two finishes in the second repechage. The second eights grand final will begin at 8:15 a.m. PT Sunday.

By virtue of its victory in Friday's heat, the Bears' varsity four already qualified for the grand final. Joining Cal and Brown, which won the other heat, will be Ohio State, Michigan State, Washington State and Washington.
