Cal Wins Two Heats on Opening Day of NCAA Regatta

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - On the opening day of the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships, California won its heats in both the varsity eight and varsity four events. The Bears' second varsity eight placed second to Ohio State and was forced to race in a Saturday repechage to qualify for the final.

In the varsity event, Cal crossed the line in 6:36.7970, almost two seconds ahead of Washington State. The Bears, who are ranked No. 2 in the nation, had the second-fastest time of the day to top-rated Princeton's 6:32.2240.

Cal was second to Ohio State, 6:54.4560 to 6:56.2090 in the second varsity eight heat. Only the heat winner advanced to the final.

In the varsity four, Cal again beat Washington State to the finish in its heat, covering the course in 7:25.2410.

The championships continue through Sunday and the NCAA winner is determined by a point total combining results in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four events.
