Lindsey Nelson Cruises Into NCAA Singles Championship Match
May 28, 2006
PALO ALTO, CALIF. - USC sophomore Lindsey Nelson drilled out a 6-3, 6-2 win over William and Mary's Megan Moulton-Levy on Sunday in the NCAA Women's Singles Semifinals. That smooth win catapults Nelson into the NCAA title match against Pac-10 foe Suzi Babos of California. The all-Pac-10 championship showdown is set for noon on Monday (May 29) at Stanford's Taube Tennis Center.
One last break was all it took for #18 Nelson to launch herself into the NCAA final. Nelson took a lead and never looked back in the match, forcing her way to an early advantage with a 6-3 win in the first set. Seeing that title match within her reach, Nelson breezed through the second set, giving up just two games to #19 Moulton-Levy in the second set. Nelson stole away the final game even with Moulton-Levy at the service line to tack up the 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Nelson's championship opponent #27 Babos had faced Stanford's Theresa Logar in the other semifinal. That match was tighter, with Babos pulling out a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 victory over her Pac-10 opponent to earn her slot against Nelson in the final.
Nelson is now 25-8 overall in this season's singles action. Neither Nelson nor Babos were seeded for the NCAA Singles Championships, but both beat standout players to reach the final. Nelson downed top-seeded Audra Cohen of Miami in the Round of 16, while Babos beat the defending NCAA Singles champ, fourth-seeded Zuzana Zemenova of Baylor in the same round.
