Suzi Babos Advances to NCAA Women's Tennis Finals
May 28, 2006
Stanford, Calif. - Sophomore Suzi Babos defeated Stanford's Theresa Logar in three sets in the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships semifinals Sunday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center at Stanford. Babos will face Pac-10 foe Lindsey Nelson of USC in the NCAA title match, which is slated to begin tomorrow at noon.
'I was really excited before I started the match,' said Babos. 'I've never played in the semifinals in the NCAAs. The crowd was really great and it was just a great experience to be out there and play. I'm really happy with my performance today.'
Babos started the match off strong, grabbing a 6-4 decision in the first set over No. 9-16 Logar, who was the only seeded playing remaining in the tournament. But Logar, who is currently ranked 10th in the nation in singles, came back to win the next set, 6-3. With the score tied 1-1, Babos fought back to ensure the victory and downed Logar, 6-2, in the third set. This will mark Babos' first appearance in the finals and the first time since 1991 when Lisa Albano was in the finals, that Cal has advanced this far in the singles competition. Last year Babos fell in the second round of the tournament to Logar, 6-1, 6-3.
Twenty-seventh ranked Babos' championship opponent, 18th-ranked Lindsey Nelson, defeated William and Mary's Megan Moulton-Levy, 6-3, 6-2, this afternoon in the semifinals to advance. Nelson currently boasts a 25-8 overall singles record, while Babos is currently 31-13 on the singles court. Neither player was seeded coming into the tournament, but both defeated top opponents to reach the finals. Babos outlasted the defending singles champion, fourth-seeded Zuzana Zemenova of Baylor, in the round of 16 and Nelson defeated top-seeded Audra Cohen of Miami in the same round.
'I didn't quite expect it to tell you the truth,' said Babos about being in the NCAA final. 'I actually had my ticket for today to go home. I just came here and realized that this was the NCAAs. If I'm given the opportunity, I have to go with it. After I won my first match, I decided I came here and had something to do. If I'm playing well enough, then I can go pretty far. Match by match I'm getting more confident. I feel like I'm playing a lot better and I really enjoy being here. It's just such a great experience.'
