Wood Ready To Take On NCAA Championship Field
May 30, 2006
USC senior Taylor Wood, who tied for second at the NCAA Championships East Regional, will represent Trojan men's golf when he plays as an individual at the 2006 NCAA Men's Golf Championships at Crosswater G.C. in Sunriver, Ore., Wednesday through Saturday (May 31-June 3).
Wood's 4-under 212 led Troy at the East Regional, which he led going into the final round. His second-round 69 was his lowest 18-hole score since April 3 and marked the sixth sub-70 round of the season.
He leads the Trojans in stroke average (72.26) and has been USC's highest finisher four times in 12 tournaments, including season-best ties for second at the aforementioned East Regional and at the U.S. Intercollegiate by the Maple Fund. He has five top 10 finishes overall.
Ranked No. 34 in the nation by Golfweek.com, Wood finished seventh at the 2005 NCAA Championships, helping USC to a sixth-place finish.
Wood will join five other individual players and 30 five-man squads in taking on Crosswater's 7,630-yard, 72-par course. He tied for 32nd in the fall on this course at the Ping/Golfweek Preview.
Wood, an honorable mention All-American last year, will tee off at 2:35 p.m. (PDT) on the 1st hole on Wednesday and will begin off the 10th hole at 9:20 a.m. on Thursday. All 156 players will play the first three rounds. Only the top 15 teams and next top players not on advancing teams will play the final round.
Wood will try to join Scott Simpson (1976, 1977) and Ron Commans (1981) as USC's NCAA individual title winners.
