Liu, Barnes Named to ESPN Academic All-America Women's At-Large Teams

Stanford seniors Amber Liu and Alice Barnes have been selected to the ESPN Academic All-America Women's At-Large teams, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Barnes was named to the District 8 First Team, while Liu received Second Team honors. As a member of the First Team, Barnes will appear on the ballot for 2006 Academic All-America honors.

The Academic All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually, who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America), a 2,000 member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports. The women's At-Large program for Academic All-America includes the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, golf,gymnastics, field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis, and water polo.

Barnes, a native of Cambridge, U.K., was selected to the District 8 First Team in the University Division. The senior is a four-time All-American and an Art major with a 3.67 cumulative grade point average. Last week, she led her team to its 15th NCAA team title. Liu, a La Mesa, Calif. native, was selected to the District 8 Second Team in the University Division. The Cardinal standout is an Economics major with a 3.66 cumulative grade point average and was recently named the ITA Senior Player of the Year.
