Woods, Thorson Selected for All-American Honors
May 31, 2006
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Senior catcher Haley Woods of the California softball team has been named a first-team All-American and senior pitcher Kristina Thorson earned second-team honors, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced Wednesday. It is Woods' first All-American award, while Thorson has been named to the second team the past two seasons. This marks the sixth consecutive year that at least two Cal players have been awarded All-American distinction.
Woods earned first-team honors after a record-breaking 2006 season. The Burlingame, Calif., native finished her career as Cal's all-time record-holder in RBI (191) and total bases (413). She matched her career-high for home runs in a season (16) in 2006, and her 55 RBI this year ranks third on Cal's single-season list. Woods holds the first (58, 2005), second (57, 2004) and third spots on the single-season RBI charts.
The senior catcher started every game for the past three seasons (195 games). She led the Bears in 10 offensive categories in the 2006 campaign - slugging percentage (.694), runs scored (39), hits (65), RBI (55), doubles (14), home runs (16), total bases (127), walks (31), at bats (183) and total plate appearances (220).
Thorson, who was named the 2006 Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year, has etched her name all over the Cal record books. She is one of only three Cal pitchers to collect 100 wins and 1,000 strikeouts in a career, finishing her four years with 102 and 1,071, respectively. The Lake Forest Park, Wash., native leads the conference in ERA (0.83, seventh nationally), innings pitched (302.0), strikeouts (461), strikeouts looking (174), wins (36, third nationally), saves (5, fifth nationally) and appearances (53).
Both Woods and Thorson were named to the All-Pac-10 and All-Pacific Region first teams earlier this month.
The Bears ended their season in the Super Regional round of the NCAA Tournament. Cal finished with a 48-14 overall record, including a third-place showing in the Pac-10 Conference.
