Four Cougars Named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Team

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State's Tamara Diles, McKinnon Hanson, Haley Paul and Ryan Scott have been named to the 2005-06 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII for University Division Men's and Women's Track & Field/ Cross Country Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Cougars Diles and Hanson were named to the Women's District VIII first team. Diles is a senior pole vaulter from Bellevue, Wash., with a 3.35 GPA in sport management. Hanson is a sophomore high jumper from LaPush, Wash., with a 4.0 grade point average majoring in philosophy. Distance runner Paul, a sophomore from Phoenix, Ariz., has a 3.93 GPA with an undeclared major and was named to the District VIII women's second team.

Diles and Paul are also athletic All-Americans with Diles owning the school record for women's pole vault. All three women are competing at the NCAA Div. I Outdoor Track & Field Championships next week at Sacramento.

Scott, a redshirt sophomore javelin thrower from Kalama, Wash., was named to the Men's District VIII second team. Scott has a 3.85 GPA and is majoring in management and operations.

To be eligible for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American honors a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), must be a significant contributor to the team, and be in at least their second season at their current school. District VIII includes schools in the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and British Columbia.

The District VIII first team student-athletes (10) advance to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American national ballot with the final teams announced later in the month.
