Emilsson Earns First Team, Caldwell Second Team <i>ESPN The Magazine</i>/CoSIDA Academic All-Dist. 8 Honors

UCLA senior Erik Emilsson and Bruin junior Ashley Caldwell have earned ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-Dist. 8 honors. Emilsson is a first-team selection who is eligible for the upcoming All-American ballot and Caldwell was a second-team choice.

Emilsson, from Bjarred, Sweden with a 3.23gpa in business-economics, suffered a right knee injury following the 2006 Pac-10 meet, was not able to run at the recent NCAA West Regional, and his season has concluded. A 2005 NCAA Outdoor All-American in the 3000m steeplechase, Emilsson placed fifth in the event (8:58.84) at the 2006 Pac-10. His personal-best 3000m steeplechase 8:34.80 is No. 3 in UCLA history. He also finished third in the event at the 2005 and 2003 Pac-10. His has personal-bests of 1:50.58 (800m) and 3:45.38 (1500m). Emilsson is a 2003 NCAA cross country individual qualifier. In outdoor track, he is a 2006 Honorable Mention Academic All-Pac-10 and a 2006/2005 MPSF Indoor All-Academic. Emilsson is also a second-team 2005 CoSIDA Academic All-Dist. 8 and second-team Pac-10 All-Academic, along with a 2003 cross country second-team Pac-10 All-Academic selection.

Caldwell, from Los Gatos, CA HS with a 3.32gpa in pre-political science, will compete in the 1500m (4:21.46, personal and season-best/at-large bid) at the upcoming NCAA Outdoor T & F Championships (June 7-10 in Sacramento). She placed seventh (4:28.65) in the 1500m at the recently concluded NCAA West Region and at the 2006 Pac-10, Caldwell finished sixth (season-best 2:09.33) in the 800m and fourth (personal-best 4:21.46) in the 1500m. A four-time All-American (2005/2003 Cross Country, 2004 Indoor DMR/Outdoor 800m), she's the 2004 Pac-10 800m champ (personal-best 2:05.01, No. 4 in UCLA history). Caldwell is a 2006 fourth-team Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award (third-team in 2005) and an honorable mention 2006 Pac-10 All-Academic . . . She's a 2006/2005 MPSF Indoor Academic All-Conference and a 2005/2003 cross country honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic. In 2004 Caldwell was a track & field honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic selection.

Also nominated for CoSIDA All-Dist. 8 Academic consideration was junior Jackie Nguyen (3.73gpa, physiological science/Atherton, CA, Castilleja HS). A 2004 NCAA Outdoor All-American in the pole vault, she is a 2006/2005 first-team Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award selection. Her 13-7.25 lifetime best is No. 4 in UCLA history.
