June 3, 2006

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - Even with Katie Burkhart's 16 innings on the mound and 26 strikeouts total on the day, the 2006 Sun Devil season wrapped up Saturday night as ASU fell to Tennessee in nine innings, 3-1. ASU finishes the season at 53-15, after breaking the majority of ASU's single-season records this year. Tennessee advances to 60-11 on the season and will face-off against Arizona tomorrow to attempt to get into the championship bracket.

The Lady Vols took the lead first in the fifth inning after loading the bases with a lead-off single up the middle from Kristi Durant followed with a walk to Natalie Brock and a single to third base where Durant was brought home after a Sun Devil wild throw allowed the force out to score and India Childs to gain first as the Lady Vols grabbed a 1-0 lead.

The Sun Devil deficit was short-lived though as Heidi Knabe stepped up in the bottom of the inning to hit her second home-run of the day as she crushed a solo shot over left field to tie it at 1-1.

The Sun Devils took it to extra innings where the ASU and the Lady Vols kept it tied until the ninth inning when freshman third-baseman, Jennifer Griffin dug in with one on to hit her ninth home run of the season to up the Lady Vols 3-1. The Sun Devil offense couldn't answer as two strikeouts and a pop out later, the 2006 Sun Devil campaign came to an end.

The Lady Vols will now face Arizona as both teams vie for a spot in the championship session. The Lady Vols will have to defeat the Wildcats twice to get into the championship round. The first game between Arizona and Tennessee will kick-off tomorrow at noon CT on ESPN2.
