June 4, 2006
Malibu, Calif. - Missouri freshman LHP Rick Zagone pitched a complete game to lead the No. 4-seed Tigers to a 2-1 win over No. 2-seed UCLA in an elimination game of the Malibu Regional on Sunday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. UCLA ends its season with a 33-25 record.
Junior Tyson Brummett (6-7) tossed 6.2 innings allowing two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and one walk in the loss.
UCLA hit a combined 0-for-9 at the plate with runners in scoring position, stranding eight runners on base in the game.
UCLA took a 1-0 lead over Missouri in the top of the second inning. Stewart led off with a walk and Decker followed with an infield hit to give the Bruins two runners. Senior Sean Smith moved them over a base with a sacrifice bunt, and Dunlap scored Stewart from third with a RBI groundout to third.
Brummett retired 11-straight Tigers from the first inning until giving up a single to Brock Bond in the bottom of the fifth inning. Bond's hit turned into a run for Missouri to tie the game up at 1-1. Gary Arndt followed with a single up the middle to advance Bond to third. Brummett then scored Bond on a balk using a first-to-third pickoff move.
J.C. Field followed with a single up the middle but senior Josh Roenicke gunned out Arndt at home from center field as he tried to score from second base. Brummett then issued a walk to Evan Frey and hit Derek Chambers with a pitch to load the bases up for Mizzou with two outs, but Jacob Priday flied to left on a full count to end the inning and the threat.
Brummett responded by striking out the side in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Mizzou took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Bond was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout to second.
With two outs, junior Paul Oseguera came in to pitch to Frey in relief of Brummett. Frey singled through the left side on a full count to score Bond and give the Tigers the eventual game-winning run.
