Northwestern Eliminates Softball from WCWS
June 4, 2006
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - UCLA fought hard throughout the day but two eighth-inning home runs by Northwestern gave the Wildcats the 3-1 victory over UCLA on Sunday afternoon in Oklahoma City. The Bruins end the season with a record of 50-9, and UCLA's outstanding senior class of Caitlin Benyi, Andrea Duran, Alissa Eno and Emily Zaplatosch completes their Bruin career with two NCAA Titles, a runner-up and a third-place finish. Northwestern advances to the NCAA Championship series against either Arizona or Tennessee
The Wildcats struck first on a home run by Jamie Dotson to lead off the second inning, making the score 1-0 in Northwestern's favor. UCLA was able to load the bases in the bottom half of the inning with a one-out walk from Jodie Legaspi, a single up the middle from Lisa Dodd and a pinch-hit walk by Danielle Peterson, but Tara Henry grounded out to end the inning and the UCLA threat.
UCLA tied the game in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning. Legaspi led off the inning with a double down the left field line, was sacrificed to third base by Dodd and came home to score on a two-out RBI single to left by pinch-hitter Kristen Dedmon, tying the game at 1-1.
The Bruins big rally was rendered irrelevant in the top of the eighth inning as Tammy Williams and Garland Cooper connected on back-to-back home runs to lead off the eighth inning and give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead headed to the bottom half of the eighth.
Anjelica Selden finished with eight strikeouts and no walks, but allowed nine hits and three earned runs in the contest. She completes her sophomore season with a record of 35-7 and 408 strikeouts, the second-best total in school history.
