Sacramento, Ca - Twenty-one Stanford athletes (eleven women, ten men) have qualified for the 2006 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track & Field Championships which will be held June 7-10 at the A.G. Spanos Sports Complex on the campus of Sacramento State University.

Fifteen athletes chalked up Top 5 finishes at last weekend's NCAA West Regional in Provo, Utah, and another five athletes received at-large invitations. In addition, Neftalem Araia was an automatic NCAA qualifier in the 10,000 meters.

The eleven women entered are Chauntae Bayne-Hackett (100 meters, 200 meters), Janice Davis (200 meters), Nashonme Johnson (400 meters), Ashley Freeman (800 meters), Sarah Hopping (hammer), Danielle Maier (javelin), Erica McLain (long jump, triple jump), Lauren Stewart (triple jump), Amanda Trotter (5000 meters), Katy Trotter (5000 meters) and Melissa Yunghans (shot put). The ten men are Neftalem Araia (10,000 meters), Russell Brown (1500 meters), Hakon DeVries (5000 meters), Michael Garcia (800 meters), Brett Gotcher (10,000 meters), Graeme Hoste (pole vault), Hari Mix (10,000 meters), Jonathan Pierce (3000 meter steeplechase, 10,000 meters), Rolf Steier (1500 meters) and Solomon Welch (triple jump).

Last year, the Cardinal women finished fifth at the NCAA Championship while the Stanford men placed seventh. Michael Robertson won the NCAA title in the discus while Ryan Hall edged out teammate Ian Dobson to capture the 5000 meters. Robertson is redshirting this year, while Hall has graduated. The Stanford women have finished in the Top 10 the last five years.

Several Stanford athletes are ranked among the leaders in their respective events. They include Neftalem Araia who is ranked third in the 10,000 meters (28:27.43), Graeme Hoste (third in the pole vault at 18-1, 5.51m), Erica McLain, who is third in the nation in the triple jump (45-5, 12.84m) and Sarah Hopping, who is fourth in the nation in the hammer (219-8, 66.96m).

Chauntae Bayne-Hackett, 100 Meters/200 Meters, Junior/Sophomore (ath), Ft. Worth, Tx
One of top athletes on the Cardinal this year ... Has emerged as one of the top collegiate sprinters in the United States ... The Pac-10 champion in the 400 meters with a school record effort of 52.35 ... However, will concentrate on the 100 and 200 meters at the NCAA's ... Set the school record in the 200 meters in the prelims at the NCAA West Regional (5/26/06) with an altitude-adjusted time of 22.94 (#9 in the country) ... That broke the 1992 school record of 23.00 by Chryste Gaines ... Finished second in the 200 meter final at the West Regional ... Finished third in the 800 meters (2:08.84) at the NCAA West Regional at BYU ... Ran an altitude-adjusted time of 2:07.05 in the prelims at the West Regional ... Finished fourth in the 800 meters (2:08.57) at the conference championship (5/14/06) ... Sarah Hopping, Hammer, Senior, Longmont, Co
Has emerged as one of the top collegiate hammer throwers in the United States ... Began the 2006 outdoor season with a then career-best throw of 204-2 (62.23m) ... Raised her career-best and school record mark to 219-8 (66.96m) in finishing second at the Pac-10 Championship (5/14/06) which also is fourth-best among collegiate performers this year ...
