Chelsea Johnson is Honda Sports Award T&F Finalist

The Collegiate Women Sports Awards is very pleased to announce the finalists for track and field. UCLA senior pole vaulter Chelsea Johnson is one of the four finalists. The winner will be decided by nationwide voting among NCAA member schools and will receive the 2005-2006 Honda Award for track and field and become a nominee for The Honda-Broderick Cup awarded annually to the nation's outstanding collegiate woman athlete of the year.

Johnson (Atascadero HS, CA) is currently in Sacramento for the 2006 NCAA Outdoor T & F Championships. She will compete in the pole vault qualifying on Thursday (the finals are set for Saturday). The current NCAA Outdoor record-holder (15-1), Johnson in 2006 is the NCAA West Region and Pac-10 champion. During her Bruin career, she has twice set the NCAA Outdoor record (15-1, 2006/15-0, 2004), is a two-time NCAA Champion (2006 Indoor/2004 Outdoor) and a two-time Pac-10 Champion (2006/2005). In addition to the honor of this selection, American Honda will donate $1,000 to the women's athletic fund of each nominee's university. The winner's program will receive $5,000.
The ballot will be sent to all NCAA senior women administrators today (June 6, 2006) and schools will be notified of the results of the balloting Thursday, June 8 after 5 p.m. PDT.
