Johnson Tops 800m Prelim at NCAA Championships

June 7, 2006

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - California sophomore Alysia Johnson set a personal record with the fastest time in the preliminaries of the 800-meter run on the first day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday at Sacramento State's Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex. Her time of 2:05.10, also a Cal season-best, qualified Johnson for Thursday's semifinal round. She beat Michigan freshman Geena Gall, who ran the second-best time in the 800 meters, by .21 seconds in heat two of the event.

Johnson's time of 2:05.10 is the fourth-fastest time in Cal history. Her previous PR in the 800 meters was a 2:05.49, which she ran on March 10 at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Golden Bears senior Antonette Carter advanced to Friday's 200-meter dash semifinal round, running a 23.25 to take third place in her qualifying heat. Carter missed qualifying for tomorrow's long jump final by a quarter of an inch, coming in 13th with a jump of 20-06.25 (6.25m). The top 12 jumpers qualified for the final, and the 12th-place jumper, Miami's Tabia Charles, had a mark of 20-06.50 (6.26m).

Fellow Cal senior Osarhiemen Omwanghe likewise narrowly missed a spot in the 100-meter hurdles semifinal round, running a 13.58 for 20th place in the first round. The top three runners from each of three heats plus the next best six advanced, and Omwanghe finished nine hundredths of a second behind Hampton's Yvette Lewis (18th in 13.49), who snagged the final qualifying spot.

Cal freshman Emilee Strot was 23rd in the discus prelim, with a toss of 155-07 (47.43m), and did not advance.

In the last event of the night, Bears junior Giliat Ghebray ran a 14:03.62 in the 5000-meter run prelim to qualify for Friday night's final.

Junior Carrie Johnson will be the first Bear to compete on Thursday, the second day of the NCAA Championships, in the 11 a.m. qualifying round of the hammer throw. Freshman teammate Ryan Young and senior teammate Paul Teinert are next, competing in the 1:15 p.m. qualifying round of the javelin. Alysia Johnson runs in the 800 semi scheduled for 4:50 p.m.
