June 8, 2006

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Two more Washington State University competitors advanced to the next round at the NCAA Div. I Track & Field Championships Thursday at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex.

Pullman junior John Cassleman ran his 400m hurdles preliminary heat in a time of 50.74 seconds, ninth fastest on the day, to advance to the Friday evening semifinals. Cassleman's personal best time of 49.53 seconds is second-best in WSU history and was the time of his second-place finish at the 2006 Pac-10 Championships.

Tamara Diles (senior, Bellevue, Wash.) was one of 16 women to advance to the final in the women's pole vault after clearing 13-feet, 5 1/4 inches (4.10m) in the qualifying round. Diles passed on the opening height of 12-3 1/2 (3.75m), needed two attempts to clear the next bar at 12-9 1/2 (3.90m), but cleared the next two heights - 13-1 1/2 (4.00m) and 13-5 1/4 (4.10m) on her first try. Diles holds the WSU women's pole vault record of 13-11 1/4 (4.25m) and will compete in Saturday afternoon's NCAA final.

A trio of Cougar men found disappointment Thursday as two ended their collegiate seasons and one his WSU career in qualifying competition.

Junior Jaycee Robertson (Spanaway, Wash.) and senior James McSwain (Las Vegas) did not advance to the semifinals of the men's 100m first round after finishing 22nd and 24th in the preliminary heats, respectively. Robertson ran a time of 10.59 seconds while McSwain ran a time of 10.69 as the top 18 qualifiers' times ranged from 10.23 to 10.50 seconds.

Robertson and McSwain were also members of the WSU men's 4x100m relay team that was disqualified in the Wednesday prelim heats. Robertson had also qualified for the 200m dash but was only declared to race in the relay and the 100m dash.

Jon Jeffreys (sophomore, Spokane Valley, Wash.) did not advance from the men's javelin qualifying round after throwing 197-feet, 8 inches (60.25m).

Cougars competing in Friday's events include Diana Pickler and Julie Pickler in the first day of the heptathlon, Justin Woods in the men's 200m dash semifinals, John Cassleman in the men's 400m hurdles semifinals, and Matt Lamb in the men's discus final.
