Three Bruins Named to GCAA All-America Teams

Three UCLA golfers were named to the Golf Coaches Assn. of America (GCAA) All-America Team, the association announced Thursday.
Freshman Erik Flores earned 2nd Team All-America honors, and sophomores Daniel Im and Kevin Chappell were selected to the GCAA Honorable Mention All-America Team. The All-America recognition was the first for each golfer. In addition, Flores became the first UCLA freshman golfer to earn All-America honors.
'Having three players named to the (coaches) All-America team is quite an honor for our program,' said Head Coach O.D. Vincent. 'It represents a lot of hard work on the players' part, and it's the start of great things for the future of our program.'
Flores led the team in scoring average (72.1), Top 10s (7), Top 20s (10), and rounds under 70 (10). He also recorded six Top 3 finishes. In addition, he earned 1st Team All-Pac-10 honors, Pac-10 Freshman of the Year acclaim and GCAA All-Pacific Region honors.
Chappell became UCLA's second NCAA Regional champion with his one-stroke victory at the East Regional, where the Bruins qualified for the NCAA Championship. He recorded a scoring average of 73.4 with six Top 20 finishes and eight rounds under par. He was also named 2nd Team All-Pac-10 and GCAA All-Pacific Region.
Im became UCLA's sixth conference individual champion as the Bruins won their fifth Pac-10 title in April. He tied with Flores with 15 rounds under par and compiled a scoring average of 72.7. He also earned 1st Team All-Pac-10 honors and GCAA All-Pacific Region acclaim. He was selected Pac-10 Golfer of the Month in April.
In other UCLA golf news, three former Bruins qualified to play in the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club, June 15-18.
Professionals Tom Pernice Jr., Duffy Waldorf and Jay Delsing each earned a spot in the 156-player field through sectional qualifying.
Pernice posted scores of 68-68--136 at Conoe Creek in Summit, NJ on Monday. On Tuesday Waldorf carded rounds of 68-72--140 at Brookside GC in Columbus, OH and Delsing advanced with scores of 71-71--142 at Fox Run GC in his hometown of St. Louis, Mo.
