USC Adds Two Players For 2006 Season
June 12, 2006
LOS ANGELES -- Middle blocker Marta Siemiatkowska (Kalisz, Poland/College of Southern Idaho) has signed a national letter-of-intent while middle blocker/outside hitter Bethany Johansen (San Jose/Archbishop Mitty HS/UC Santa Barbara) has transferred to play for the USC women's volleyball program in 2006, head coach Mick Haley announced today. Both will be juniors and have two years of eligibility remaining.
The 6-3 Johansen and 6-1 Siemiatkowska round out an impressive class for the Women of Troy which includes Taylor Carico, rated as one of the nation's top incoming setters, and junior college national player of the year JoAnna Kaczor, also from the College of Southern Idaho.
Johansen led the Gauchos last season with a .375 hitting percentage as UCSB finished 21-9, reaching the first round of the NCAA Tournament. She averaged 1.40 kills and 0.67 blocks per game as a sophomore. In her 2004 freshman season, she hit .345 and earned Big West Conference All-Freshman Team honors.
'We are excited about gaining an athlete like Bethany who has shown that she can play Division I volleyball,' said Haley. 'She has great size and is versatile enough to play in the middle or on the right side.'
Siemiatkowska posted a .416 hitting percentage for the 2005 NJCAA national champions as CSI finished with a 50-2 record. She averaged 2.12 kills per game and led the Golden Eagles with 1.52 blocks per game, adding 58 service aces on the season.
'Marta can come in and give us depth immediately at the middle blocker position,' said Haley. 'She is a hard worker who is excited to play at a top-level Division I program. Hopefully, she can increase our point-scoring ability this season.'
USC opens the 2006 season at the Century Tel/Classic Honda Tournament in San Marcos, Texas (Aug. 25-26) and will play its first-ever match in the brand-new Galen Events Center on Thursday (Sept. 14) against Pepperdine at 6 p.m.
