UCLA's Chris Jensen and Kate Richardson Named Pac-10 Medal Winners
June 13, 2006
Walnut Creek, Calif. - UCLA seniors Chris Jensen and Kate Richardson were selected as 2005-06 Pacific-10 Conference Medal winners in their respective sports of baseball and gymnastics, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Tuesday.
A Pac-10 Conference Medal is awarded annually to each member institution's outstanding senior male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.
Jensen, from San Diego, Calif., ended his career at UCLA with an impressive senior campaign. The fifth-year Bruin batted .325 (76-234) with six home runs and team bests of 36 RBI and 45 runs scored, playing in all 58 games for UCLA in right field this season.
Jensen was a 2006 All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention selection, a 2006 Pac-10 All-Academic First-Team Team member, and a 2006 CoSIDA District 8 First-Team Academic All-America selection. He finishes his career at UCLA as a .319 (163-511) hitter in 152 collegiate games, and was selected in the 22nd-round by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2006 MLB Draft.
Richardson, from Coquitlam, BC, is a two-time Academic All-American and a NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship award winner. In her four years as a member of the UCLA gymnastics team, she won three NCAA individual championships (2003 bars and beam, 2006 floor) and two NCAA team titles (2003, 2004), as well as the 2003 Pac-10 all-around and 2003 and 2004 floor exercise titles. The 2006 Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year and 2003 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year finished her career as a 13-time All-American.
Richardson is one of only two female gymnasts ever to compete at the Olympic Games as a collegiate athlete, and in her second Olympics in 2004, she became the first Canadian woman to qualify for event finals on floor exercise, where she placed seventh.
The Conference Medal winners will be honored at the State Farm Pride of the Pac-10 Luncheon held in Los Angeles in conjunction with the Pac-10 Men's Basketball Tournament next March.
