Kevin Stadler, Taylor Wood Strong In U.S. Open 1st Rd.
June 15, 2006
Former Trojan All-American Kevin Stadler is two shots off the lead and Taylor Wood, who only recently finished his senior year at USC, is just five back after the first round of the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot C.C. in Mamaroneck, N.Y.
Stadler fired a 1-over 71 to finish tied for seventh, two back of leader Colin Montgomerie (69). Stadler was 1-over on the front 9 and even coming home, including a birdie on 17.
Wood, who like Stadler was among the last to tee off in the 156-man field, finished with a 4-over 74 and was 2-over on both the front and back 9. The 2006 All-American third teamer was 1-over after eight holes, but hit a rough patch and bogeyed three of the next five holes. Wood settled down, however, to par the remaining five holes.
Also in action was 2005 USC grad and 2004 All-American Ben Hayes and fellow recent grad David Oh. Hayes finished with a 6-over 76 (as did Tiger Woods), tied for 68th. Oh had a tough first day, finishing 13-over with an 83, tied for 152nd.
