June 16, 2006
BERKELEY, Calif. - California junior Caroline Lea is one of 20 players attending this week's U.S. under-21 women's national team camp at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md. The Golden Bear midfielder has previously spent time with the U.S. under-20 national team.
The USA plays its final of three games of the June 11-17 camp Saturday against the reserves of the USL W-League's Washington Freedom. Earlier this week, the USA faced the Virginia Majestics and the defending W-League champion New Jersey Wildcats.
This is the final training camp for U.S. head coach Jill Ellis' squad before she chooses her roster for the 2006 Nordic Cup, the annual competition that includes almost all of the world's top U-21 women's teams. The Nordic Cup will be held this summer in Norway from July 16-22. The United States has won an unprecedented seven straight Nordic Cups against the top U-21 teams from Europe.
As a sophomore in 2005, Lea played in 19 games for Cal and made nine starts. She was credited with the game-winning goals in the Bears' 1-0 triumph over Washington and 2-0 victory over No. 15 Stanford.
