June 19, 2006

WALNUT CREEK, CA -- Freshman Kevin Craddock was honored by the Pac-10 Conference on Monday as the Male Newcomer of the Year after an impressive first season competing in collegiate track and field.

Craddock finished second at both the Pac-10 and West Region Championships in the high hurdles, and then earned All-American honors with his eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. He also was a regional qualifier in the 400m hurdles, but focused on the 110m hurdles during the post-season. He ended the season with top times of 13.73 in the high hurdles and 52.01 in the intermediate hurdles.

Craddock is also joined by two athletes from the women's team, who were also honored by the conference office - Chelsea Johnson and Nicole Leach.

The Bruins swept the Newcomer of the Year awards after impressive seasons by both Craddock and Leach in their first season as Bruins.

Leach won the Pac-10 and West Region titles in the 400m hurdles before wrapping up her first collegiate season with All-American honors after a fifth-place finish at Nationals.

Johnson won the pole vault title at the Pac-10 Championships, regaining her NCAA Collegiate Record in the process, with a clearance of 15-1. She then went on to win the West Region title and All-American honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with her second-place finish in that event.

Johnson also broke the Pac-10 Meet, Pac-10 Conference and UCLA school records with her performance at the conference championship meet.

Johnson and Leach continue their season this weekend in Indianapolis, IN at the USATF Senior/Junior National Championships, while Craddock's season has come to a close.
