UW's Bingisser Named Academic All-American

June 19, 2006

SEATTLE - Washington's Martin Bingisser was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America third team Monday, as selected by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The honor is the first for Bingisser, who boasts the rare distinction of earning both athletic and academic All-America honors in the same year.

A first-year UW law student with a bachelor's degree in philosophy, Bingisser maintained a 3.87 undergraduate grade-point average, and holds a 3.72 GPA in his graduate studies at UW's School of Law. Bingisser earned his undergraduate degree in 2005 after just three years of college studies, and will be a second-year law student during his final season of collegiate eligibility in 2006-07.

Bingisser was also a All-American on the playing field in 2006, placing 12th in the hammer throw at the NCAA Championships earlier this month. He also captured an indoor conference title in the weight throw last season, and boasts a best of 212 feet, 9 inches in the hammer that ranks third all-time at Washington.

In addition to his academic and athletic prowess, Bingisser is the founder and editor of HammerCenter.com, a nationally-recognized network of websites dedicated to the hammer throw and featuring statistics, rankings and teaching tools for all levels of competition.

Bingisser is the third Husky in as many years to win the Academic All-America honor. Former Husky Kate Soma was a third-team All-American in 2005, and Brad Walker was a first-team Academic All-America selection in 2004.

To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must be a significant contributor with a minimum 3.20 grade-point average and at least one full academic year completed at the current institution, and be nominated by their sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in I, II, II and NAIA covering all NCAA sports.
