Women's Volleyball Wins Opener in Europe
June 19, 2006
Izola, Slovenia - Ciao from Izola, Slovenia!
After a full 24 hours of travel, we had our first full day in Europe today - feeling a little jet lagged but excited to finally be on the trip we have looked forward to all year. This morning we woke up for breakfast at around 9, ate, and then headed straight for the beach. Our hotel is on the water, in the Izola harbor, but a beach area was about a ten minute walk through the town to the other end of the arch. The city layout is similar to Catalina - a semi circle with the town center near the middle and houses extending out and up into the hill.
Some girls went for a long swim, some shopped near by and others layed in the sun. We all came back to the hotel for lunch and then took naps before walking up the hill to the gymnasium where we would play our first match against the Slovenian National team.
The Slovenian team only totaled 7 in number because they are currently on a break, but still managed to outfit enough of the team (mainly girls from their B-string) to play us. The European style of play is very different than in the US - less formal technique, more relaxed and casual defense - but still very effective. Both teams played well, taking the match to 5 games, with a victory for us in the end. Game scores were as follows: UCLA def. Slovenia 25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 20-25, 15-9
Our kill leader was co-captain Katie Carter with 22, followed by Kaitlin Sather with 17 kills and Becky Green with 8 kills. Our hitting percentage as a team was .288. The match gave us a chance to play with different line ups and gain experience adjusting to changes of liberos or other subs quickly. Tomorrow we head to Venice for a full day of sight seeing.
All the best, Tammy :)
