Marshall and Christianson Eliminated in State Amateur Match Play

June 22, 2006

UCLA junior Matt Marshall advanced to the second round of match play before falling at the 95th California State Amateur Championship, hosted by Pebble Beach Golf Links in Monterey, CA.

Marshall won his opening match 4 and 2 against Cameron Tringale of Laguna Niguel. Marshall rallied from two down after four holes to square the match at the 10th after Tringale made bogey. Marshall birdied the 11th, and picked up three points with pars at the 12th, 13th and 14th holes. A bogey at the 15th gave a point back to Tringale, but a birdie at the 16th sealed his victory.

In his second round match, Marshall lost 3up to Joseph Bramlett of Saratoga. The match was all-square through 10 holes before Bramlett notched three points with consecutive birdies on the 11th, 12th and 13th holes. Marshall got one back with a birdie at 14, but a bogey at 16 left him three down with two to play.

Junior Brandon Christianson lost 5 and 4 in his first round match against David Bartman of Los Angeles. Christianson never led in his match, going three down at the turn and falling behind four down after 10 holes. Christianson's bogey at the par 5 14th gave Bartman the victory.
