Johnson Takes Fourth in 800 at U.S. Championships
June 26, 2006
INDIANAPOLIS - California sophomore All-American Alysia Johnson ran a personal record 2:01.80 in the women's 800-meter run to take fourth place at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday at the IU Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium on the campus of IUPUI in downtown Indianapolis. Johnson's time is also the second-best time in the women's 800 in Cal history, surpassing her previous PR and Cal's previous second-best time of 2:03.04 that she ran in the 800 final at the NCAA Championships earlier this month. The only Golden Bear to run faster than Johnson in the 800 was Louise Romo, who ran a 2:01.59 in 1984.
Also on Sunday, former Bear Kristin Heaston, Cal's all-time women's shot put record holder, took fourth place in the shot put with a throw of 18.06 meters (59-03.00).
On Saturday, two former Bears reached the final of the women's long jump, with Grace Upshaw taking third place with a jump of 6.65 meters (21-10.00) and Antonette Carter, who ended her stellar Cal career at the 2006 NCAA Championships, took 10th place with a jump of 6.29 meters (20-07.75).
