Cal to Face Nevada in Pete Newell Challenge
June 28, 2006
BERKELEY - California will face Nevada and Stanford will take on Texas Tech in the 10th annual Pete Newell Challenge to be held Sunday, Dec. 3, at HP Pavilion in San Jose.
The Cal-Nevada contest will be a match-up of two teams that qualified for the 2006 NCAA Tournament. The Bears, who were 20-11 overall last season, earned a No. 7 seed in the Atlanta Regional, while Nevada, which finished with a 27-6 record, captured the Western Athletic Conference title and earned a third straight bid to the NCAA playoffs.
The Wolf Pack returns all five starters from last year's squad, including All-American Nick Fazekas, a 6-11, 240-pound senior who averaged 21.8 ppg and 10.4 rpg in 2005-06. The Bears will be led by senior All-Pac-10 guard Ayinde Ubaka, who rated among the Pac-10 leaders in scoring (14.5 ppg), assists (3.8 apg), free throw shooting (83.3%) and three-pointers (61) last season.
Cal owns an 18-7 all-time record vs. Nevada. However the schools have not played since the Bears won, 91-73, on Nov. 22, 1991 in Berkeley.
Tickets for the Pete Newell Challenge will go on sale in early October at the HP Pavilion ticket office, online at www.ticketmaster.com, through all Ticketmaster ticket centers or by phone at (408) 998-8497, (415) 421-8497 or (510) 625-8497.
Tentative game times are 2:30 p.m. for the Stanford-Texas Tech match-up and 5 p.m. for the Cal-Nevada contest. National television and radio partners will be announced at a later date.
The Pete Newell Challenge was created by Jeff Fellenzer, president of Innovative Sports Management, to honor the Hall of Fame coach and teacher who won a coaching 'Triple Crown' - an NIT championship at USF (1949), an NCAA title at Cal (1959), and an Olympic gold medal for the United States (Rome, 1960).
Newell, who will turn 91 on Aug. 31, continues to work tirelessly teaching the game to young men and women through clinics and seminars around the world, including his highly acclaimed Pete Newell Big Man Camp in Las Vegas, and the Tall Women's Basketball Camp in San Diego. The Big Man Camp, which offers instruction to both college and professional basketball players in two daily sessions, will be held Aug. 7-11 at Cox Pavilion in the Thomas & Mack Center, on the Nevada Las Vegas campus. This summer marks the 29th anniversary of the camp. The Tall Women's Camp will be held for the first time at Alliant International University, with separate sessions for high school (July 8-10) and college (July 11-13) players.
