June 28, 2006

SEATTLE - Washington junior men's golfer Zach Bixler and junior women's golfer Kim Shin have each taken the lead after round one at the Washington State men's and women's Amateur Championships. Bixler's first-round 4-under 68 earned him a one shot lead on the field, while Shin's 1-under 73 gave her a two stroke edge headed into round two. The two events are taking place concurrently, with the men playing at McCormick Woods Golf Course in Port Orchard, Wash., and the women playing at Rainier Golf and Country Club in Seattle.

Also playing in the men's Amateur are Husky senior and defending champion Alex Prugh, and sophomore John Wise. Prugh shot a first-round 1-over 73 and is in 12th place. Wise carded a 4-over 76, good for 28th. Bixler was the runner-up at last year's Amateur, finishing two strokes behind Prugh.

The men's Washington State Amateur Championship continues through Friday, June 30th, while the women's Amateur wraps up on Thursday, June 29th. Live scoring of the event is available at thewsga.org.
