June 30, 2006
Seattle - Recently-graduated Husky golfer Paige Mackenzie tees off this weekend at the U.S. Women's Open, June 30-July 3, at the Newport Country Club in Newport, R.I. She earned an automatic exemption to the event by placing 13th at last year's U.S. Open.
Mackenzie won her last tournament, the Colorado Open, by five strokes at 2-over 218. Later this summer she will represent the USA at the Curtis Cup, held July 29-30 at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore.
The first team All-American capped off her senior year with the best postseason in UW women's golf history, a run that included Washington's first Pac-10 individual title, an eight-stroke victory at the NCAA West Regional, and an eighth-place showing at the NCAA Championship, the best individual NCAA finish in UW history. She also broke her own school scoring record by nearly a full stroke. Mackenzie finished her career as the Husky record-holder with 22 Top-10 finishes and 139 rounds played.
