Hey Now, Barry's An All Star!
July 2, 2006
LOS ANGELES -- Former USC and current Oakland A's pitcher Barry Zito was named Sunday to the American League roster for the 2006 Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Pittsburgh. Zito earned his third All-Star selection after going 8-5 with a 3.28 ERA and striking out 88 in 118 innings.
His selection adds another chapter to the USC baseball program's rich tradition as former Trojans have garnered a total of 66 All-Star selections. A more impressive streak is the fact that at least one former Trojan has been selected to the All-Star Game for 20 consecutive years, dating back to 1987 when Mark McGwire was picked, ironically, as a member of the A's.
In 2003, a record five former Trojans (Aaron Boone, Bret Boone, Geoff Jenkins, Mark Prior and Zito) were selected as All-Stars.
