USC To Host 2009 NCAA Women's Basketball Opening Rounds
July 6, 2006
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The highly anticipated Galen Center -- new home to USC basketball and volleyball -- has been selected as a host for the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball First and Second Rounds in 2009. The postseason stint will mark the second in three years for the Trojans' new home, as USC is also hosting the 2007 NCAA opening rounds.
USC last hosted NCAA competition in 1994, when the Women of Troy called the Los Angeles Sports Arena home and current USC assistant coach Jody Wynn (then Jody Anton) was a sophomore playing for the Women of Troy. Now, USC is lined up for two hosting gigs in the next three years, as the Galen Center will be home to first- and second-round games for the coming season in 2007 as well as the recently announced 2009 competition.
The Galen Center was selected as one of eight sites hosting first and second rounds in 2009. The following cities also are hosting 2009 NCAA opening rounds: Albuquerque, N.M.; Baton Rouge, La.; College Park, Md.; Columbus, Ohio; Duluth, Ga.; Lubbock, Texas; and Piscataway, N.J.The NCAA Regional sites are Berkeley, Calif.; Oklahoma City, Okla.; Raleigh, N.C.; and Trenton, N.J., and the 2009 Final Four is set for St. Louis.
The USC women's basketball program has had much success in the recent years, as the Women of Troy are working toward bringing back the winning tradition that USC has enjoyed in its history. The Trojans have reached the NCAA Tournament the past two seasons, both times falling in the second round to the eventual NCAA finalist. USC returns all but one player for the 2006-07 season, and is in line to continue the momentum that head coach Mark Trakh has helped build as he enters his third year at the helm of the women's basketball program.
