Eight Bruin Swimmers to Compete at Janet Evans Invitational This Weekend

July 13, 2006

Eight Bruin swimmers will head crosstown to USC for the Janet Evans Invite beginning on Thurday, and ending on Sunday. The meet wraps up the USA Swimming Grand Prix series as a handful of Olympians will compete in the final stop in the five-meet Grand Prix circuit.

Competing this weekend are - recent graduate Kim Vandenberg; seniors Jeana Fuccillo, Isabel Miesner, Courtney Iversen, Jane Imagane and Katie Nelson; and juniors Shannon Hackett and Luisa Los-Santos. All of the swimmers except Nelson (competing for her club team, Swim Torrance) will compete for Team Bruin. Several future Bruins who will be freshmen in the fall will also compete this weekend.

Sophomore Anna Poteete was scheduled to compete, but suffered a broken arm last week and will not be able to swim.

Eleven U.S. Olympians are scheduled to compete, including individual Olympic medalists Natalie Coughlin (Vallejo, Calif. / Cal Aquatics), Gary Hall Jr. (Miami Beach, Fla. / Cal Aquatics), Larsen Jensen (Bakersfield, Calif. / Trojan) and Allison Wagner (Oakland, Calif. / Cal Aquatics). A handful of international Olympians are also expected to swim at the meet, including three-fourths of South Africa's world record 400m freestyle relay (Roland Schoeman, Darian Townsend and Lyndon Ferns).

Eighteen members of the Chinese team - eight men and 10 women - are also scheduled to compete at JEI. The female sprinters, including Yang Yu and Xu Yanwei, headline the team, which is planning on staying at the University of Southern California facility to train through the end of July.

The event is named after Janet Evans, a four-time Olympic gold medalist and former University of Southern California assistant coach. One of the world's greatest female Olympic swimmers, Evans still holds two distance freestyle world records (800m and 1500m freestyle).

Prelims begin each day at 9:00 am with finals commencing at 5:00 pm. The 800 Free will be contested Thursday night at 5:00 pm as Imagane and Nelson will compete in that event.

On Friday, swimmers will compete in the 100 Free, 200 Fly, 200 Back and 400 Free. Saturday will have the 200 Free, 200 Breast, 50 Free and 400 IM. Sunday will wrap the competition up with the 100 Fly, 100 Back, 100 Breast, 200 IM and 1500 Free.
