Kwan, Merry Join UW Baseball Team
July 14, 2006
SEATTLE - Washington baseball coach Ken Knutson has announced two additions to the 2007 Husky baseball roster as pitcher Jorden Merry, a right-hander from Lower Columbia College, has signed a national letter of intent and catcher Max Kwan, a Seattle Prep product who attended Tulane last year, has completed the necessary paperwork to transfer to the UW. Both will be sophomores.
'We're excited to have them both in,' said Knutson, who will be in his 15th season as head coach next season. 'We expect them both to be great additions to our team and expect them both to compete for significant playing time in the spring.'
Merry, who spent one season at Lower Columbia after graduating from Pasco (Wash.) High, was an all-league selection after leading the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) with a school-record 0.51 earned run average. Merry posted a 7-0 record with three saves. Over 53 innings, he allowed only 26 hits, three earned runs and seven walks while striking out 66. Lower Columbia went 43-8 and finished as runner-up at the NWAACC tournament.
Kwan, one of the state's top prospects after his four-year career at Seattle Prep ended in 2005, played one season at Tulane, starting 33 games as a freshman for the Green Wave, who finished the season 43-21 and advanced to the NCAA tournament this past spring. A two-time all-state selection at Seattle Prep, Kwan was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 36th round of the 2005 draft. As a senior for the Panthers, he batted .500 with seven homers and 28 RBI.
The Huskies open fall practice in September and begin the 2007 season next Feb. 16 with the first of a three-game series vs. Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
