July 14, 2006

Junior Ligita Kaviere, sophomore Magda Madziewicz and incoming freshman Gabriela Varekova will provide USC with major representation next week at the 2006 World Rowing under 23 Championships, held July 20 to 23 in Hazewinkel, Belgium.

Kaviere, a 2006 All-American first teamer, will represent Latvia in the single scull after wining the Latvian National Trials. This is her debut in the single in the World Championships. She was a Junior World Champion in 2002 in the double category.

Madziewicz will represent Poland in the four categories. It is her first appearance in the U-23 World Championships. She was third in the eight in the 2004 Junior World Championships.

Varekova will stroke the Czech Republic double. She stroked the Czech Republic double to two consecutive Junior World Championship, competing in Spain in 2004 and in Germany in 2005. Competing for the first time in senior events, she debuted at the Rowing World Cup Series, placing fourth among the best in the world. She is one of the favorites to win this event.

There are 784 competitors from 54 nations competing this year at the 2006 World Rowing under 23 Championships.

This is only the second year that the Under 23 regatta has been run with 'World Rowing Championship' status.
